This Course


This 50 minute recorded webinar, was originally recorded in December of 2022 from the Developmental Trauma and Attachment Institute.

In this engaging 50 minute webinar various aspects of family therapy are explored and discussed and include: Movement towards a medical model in psychotherapy, Prioritization of individual symptoms for treatment with medication rather than examining systems, Attachment Theory emphasizes the interplay between children and caregivers, viewing issues systemically rather than as individual pathology, Relational systems beyond dyads are crucial to understand, Trauma theory is considered an intergenerational theory. The webinar delved into the key principles of Family Systems Theory as well as Bowen's Eight Interlocking Forces related to the theory. Wrapping up the discussion is a focus on the life cycle and how it impacts family dynamics.

Karen Doyle Buckwalter, MSW, LCSW, RPT-S


Karen Buckwalter, LCSW, RPT-S is a therapist, author, and podcaster. She has more than 30 years of experience working with families specializing in attachment and trauma issues primarily in the fields of foster care and adoption.

 

She has co-authored journal articles and book chapters as well as articles that have appeared in Adoption Today and Fostering Families Today Magazines. Her first book, Attachment Theory in Action, edited with Debbie Reed was released in 2017 and is the former host of the Attachment theory In Action podcast. Her second book co-authored with Debbie Reed and Wendy Lyons Sunshine, Raising the Challenging Child.
