Overcoming the Challenges of Working with Parents Involved in Foster Care
This recorded webinar will give viewers an understanding of common challenges that arise as families become involved in foster care. We will explore the barriers that get in the way of parents engaging in services and ways to reduce these barriers. In this webinar we will explore our own biases as professionals and ways we may be unintentionally impeding a parent’s ability to make progress. We will conclude with strategies to provide full disclosure to parents about progress while building and maintaining rapport.
Kimberly Wheelock, LCSW
is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and currently serves as the Clinical Supervisor of Foster and Adoption Services at Chaddock. Kim has 26 years of experience working with families navigating the child welfare system. Kim started her career as a foster parent recruiter. She soon became a child welfare specialist and adoption worker for 10 years before working with families pursuing residential placement. Kim has served as the Associate Director of Foster and Adoption Services and as clinical therapist working with families who had adopted through child welfare. Kim was appointed to the Illinois Adoption Advisory Council for two terms and as well as a Foster Pride Trainer and Adoption Certification Trainer. In her current role as clinical supervisor, Kim provides clinical oversight to birth parents, children and foster parents within Chaddock’s Foster Care Program.
Josh Carlson, LCSW
is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Executive Director of The Knowledge Center at Chaddock. He oversees the training and consultation endeavors TKC offers and is one of the lead trainers. Josh’s areas of expertise are training and coaching related to trauma-informed schools and managing secondary trauma through self-care. He offers workshops in both private and public schools and has spoken regionally and nationally on these topics.
Josh combines his over 20 years of experience at Chaddock with humor and fun that engages his audiences as they learn. He has a Masters in Social Work from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Josh is trained and certified in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) as well as Structured Psychotherapy for Adolescents Responding to Chronic Stress (SPARCS). Josh loves being a father to his four children and you will also find him volunteering at the local Community Theater as an actor in plays and musicals.
